[Thailand]. Proposal to amend the maximum limit of heavy metal contaminants in food

16/11/2023, the Thai Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) announced a consultation on the proposal to amend the maximum limit of heavy metal contaminants in food. TFDA prepares three options for each case and the public is asked to complete an assessment of the impacts caused by those three options. Public opinion will be one of the important references for the amendment.

The following are details of the proposed amendments:

1) Maintain the current situation that the ML value of aflatoxin in dried chili (including ground chili) should not exceed 20 mg/kg.

2) Set the recommended ML for aflatoxin in dried chili (including ground chili) to a value not exceeding 15 mg/kg

3) Mandatory ML regulations for aflatoxin in dried chili (including ground chili) with a value not exceeding 15 mg/kg

Ochratoxin A

Coffee

1) Maintain current status: No ML

2) Set recommended values for ochratoxin in coffee products as follows:

Roasted coffee beans, ground coffee: not more than 5 mg/kg

Instant coffee powder: not more than 10 mg/kg

3) Set the mandatory ML of ochratoxin in coffee products, to the same value as option 2.

Glycoalkaloids

Potato

1) Maintain current status: No ML

2) Set the recommended ML for Glycoalkaloids in whole fresh potatoes to a value not exceeding 200 mg/kg.

3) Mandatory ML regulations for Glycoalkaloids in whole fresh potatoes with a value not exceeding 200 mg/kg.
