[US]. FDA issued 35 PFAS Food contact Notifications ineffective.

On January 3, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a decision to ineffect 35 Food Contact Notifications (FCNs) for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The agency determined that the use of these 35 FCNs was revoked because manufacturers or suppliers had discontinued the manufacture, supply, or use of the food contact substances. The 35 FCNs were previously authorized for use as grease-resistant coatings for paper and paperboard packaging to prevent oil and water leakage.
This announcement is the latest in a series of actions that FDA has taken to address certain PFAS since the early 2000s. In July 2020, manufacturers or suppliers of food contact materials voluntarily agreed to stop selling grease repellant containing PFAS. In February 2024, FDA announced that all grease repellant containing PFAS can no longer be sold by manufacturers for use in contact with food in the U.S. market.
This action for the FCNs listed in Tables 1 and 2 will take effect on January 6, 2025. Manufacturers must comply by June 30, 2025 for FCSs listed in Table 2 that were manufactured, supplied, or used before the effective date of this action.
